Roots and the Power of Story, #378
LTYM >

Please note that this letter is in-process; the following are my notes

Dear Adam,
***
Mini-series on Alex Haley's "Roots", one of the most watched shows in TV history. "aired it in 1977 to a record-breaking audience of 130 million viewers." --wikipedia, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alex_Haley

Roots started with the "story of Kunta Kinte, who was kidnapped in the Gambia in 1767 and transported to the Province of Maryland to be sold as a slave." --wikipedia

Pivotal scene where James Earl Jones, who played Alex Haley, is listening to the village wise man drone on through the oral history of the village, suddenly hears the name "Kunta Kinte", his grandfather. "Wait", he says, "Back up". And the wise man repeated, "Kunta Kinte." Alex had found his roots.

Best,
Ed
